Definition: Ad Feminam

ad fem·i·nam
adj.

Appealing to irrelevant personal considerations concerning women, especially prejudices against them.

A term coined in 1963. Modelled on the much older ad hominem, it refers to attempts to defeat an argument rooted in sexist prejudice against women. The term is most frequently used in this sense in feminist philosophy, to note systemic tendencies to discredit opinions of women. As such, it is similar in nature and purpose to such feminist neologisms as “herstory“.
