The Real Cookie Monsters

It saddens me greatly whenever I see young people publicly promote bigotry and hatred. My hope for the future lies with a new generation of open-minded and educated people.

Unfortunately groups like Honest Girl Scouts do their best to indoctrinate the next generation with hatred towards people who they deem “different” – people who already have a hard time in a society filled with people afraid of everything the don’t understand.

This time the face of the haters is a teenage girl scout called Taylor. She doesn’t like transgender girls being able to join the Girl Scouts. She’s calling for a “nationwide boycott of Girl Scout Cookies in response to GSUSA’s bias for transgenders”. It all started when Girl Scouts of Colorado stated in October last year that transgender children are welcome in their organisation.

“Girl Scouts is an inclusive organization and we accept all girls in Kindergarten through 12th grade as members,” the statement says. “If a child identifies as a girl and the child’s family presents her as a girl, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her as a Girl Scout.”

Taylor, in her video, refers to this story saying:

That means that as long as a boy wants to be a girl they let him join based solely on his wishes and desires.

It’s bad enough that she throughout the video refers to “transgender boys” instead of “transgender girls”, which would be the correct term (this appears to be deliberate), she also keeps referring to transgender girls as being so “based solely on […] wishes and desires”. There is a definite undertone of sexuality in the way she speaks of these children and teenagers. We already know from the Honest Girl Scouts website that they are obsessed with sexuality. They also speak out against Planned Parenthood.

The sense that this is all about sex is further implied by this quote from Taylor’s video:

Girl Scouts describe themselves as an all girl experience. With that label families trust that girls will be in an environment that is not only nurturing and sensitive to girls needs, but also safe for girls.

She is concerned for the girls’ safety. But only the safety of those girls she classify as “real girls”. She thereby dismisses the needs of transgender girls as “not real” or “boys’ stuff”. Transgender girls need every bit as much nurturing and a safe environment as any other girl.

To argue this point she refers to a publication by GSUSA, quoting from page 17:

Among girls 11–17, 92 percent identified the top advantage of being in an all-girl group is that it allows you to relate to other girls because they are experiencing the same problems as you.

Contrary to what she thinks, this is exactly what makes it so important to include all girls. GSUSA seem to recognise transgender girls as girls with the same needs as “ordinary girls”. They also promote understanding and respect as key values. To quote the “Who we are”-section on the Girl Scouts main website (emphasis added):

Girl Scouting helps girls develop their full individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others.

It seems Taylor missed that lesson altogether.

At the end of the video she states:

The real question is, why is GSUSA willing to break their own safety rules and go against their own research institutes’s findings to accommodate transgender boys. Unfortunately I think it is because GSUSA cares more about promoting the desires of a small handful of people than it does for my safety and the safety of my friends and sisters.

Again, she is concerned about her safety, but seems to have no regard for the rights or safety for her transgender sisters. To quote Elyse over on Skepchick, her argument seems to boil down to: “Because… penis or something”.

Taylor, or whoever put her up to this, is either completely ignorant of what it is to be transgender – much like the woman who got fired for kicking a transgender woman out of a dressing room at Macy’s – or she is wilfully ignoring their rights in order to maintain bigoted views based in fundamentalism. In these people’s sex-obsessed minds, transgender people are all about sex and are all sexual predators. There is no data to support this view of transgender people.

As a former scout myself, I hope people are capable of seeing through the misinformation and blatant bigotry of these people and buy more cookies to help keep Girl Scouts an inclusive and open organisation.
